Register the right domain name

Domain NamesNowadays, registering a domain name should be the first step when forming a business or building your online presence.  Although the registration process is simple, there are a few things you should consider first and foremost.  The tips below wont cost you anything but your time, so follow them and your business is sure to benefit greatly in the long run!

Domain Name Length

The length of your domain name should be determined by the type of business you operate.  An online business that only advertises online can afford to have a long domain name because potential clients simply click a hyperlink, they don’t need to remember the URL.  Businesses that advertise via TV, radio, print or other means should have a shorter domain name since potential clients are required to remember the URL. Shorter domain names are easier to remember, period!

We’ll use our business Bristol County Consulting as an example…  Of course we registered so no one else could, however, when we advertise via print ads, we always use since it’s much shorter and easy to remember.

Using Hyphens

Using hyphens in your domain name isn’t necessarily a bad thing and many businesses do so to improve their search engine rankings.  For example, lets say you operate an online directory for buying cars in Massachusetts. would be a bad choice for a domain name, would be a better one.  Although this name is long, search engines view each word as an important keyword for your website.

On the down side, using hyphens opens up the possibility that your visitors mistype your domain name.  Lets pretend your first domain choice is taken and your reaction is to input a hyphen between words, your clients may be directed to your competitor’s website if they forget to input the hyphen ( /
